Help

What it does

File, New starts a blank document named Untitled.md.
File, Open files… opens .md, .markdown, .mdown, and .txt files you pick. You can pick more than one.
File, Open folder… reads a folder you pick. The browser is asked for read access only.
File, Recent in this tab reopens a file you already opened in this tab.
File, Save / Download downloads a .md file. It does not change the original file on your computer.
File, Save As… asks you for a name, then downloads a .md file.
File, Import Word (.docx)… turns a .docx file into Markdown in this tab.
File, Export Word (.docx)… downloads a .docx file from the current document.
Home, Undo and Redo move through edits in the current document.
Home sets bold, italic, strikethrough, and inline code.
Home sets a bullet list, a numbered list, a task list, or a blockquote, and it can raise or lower the list indent.
Home inserts a horizontal rule.
Home styles are Normal, Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, Heading 4, Heading 5, Heading 6, Quote, and Code Block.
Home, Find opens find and replace. Your text is matched as literal characters, including across bold and italic. Previous and Next move through the matches. Replace changes the current match. All replaces every match.
Insert, Table inserts a table. You can add a row, add a column, toggle the header row, or delete the table.
Insert, Image takes a picture you browse, a path in the folder you opened, or an image URL. A remote image URL does not display. This page's security policy blocks the request, so the browser does not fetch it.
Insert, Link inserts a web address or a relative path to another .md file. Once you have opened or saved a file, the dialog also says "Or choose an open document".
Insert, Code, Quote, and Divider insert those blocks.
View sets the document font and point size, and the Light, Sepia, or Dark theme.
View, Side Panel shows or hides the side panel.
View, Source shows the Markdown text. The formatted page stays mounted underneath.
View zoom is 75%, 100%, 125%, or 150%.
Outline lists the headings. Choosing a heading leaves Source and scrolls to that heading.
Linked Docs lists Markdown links from the open folder, including reference-style links.
Folder lists the files from Open folder….
A relative .md link in the document opens that file in this tab.
The status bar shows the file name, a mark when there are unsaved edits, Read-only when that applies, and the word and character counts.
Closing or reloading the tab with unsaved edits asks the browser to warn you.
Print prints the document only. The ribbon and this help panel are left off.
Keyboard shortcuts on the menus are Ctrl+N New, Ctrl+O Open files, Ctrl+S Save / Download, Ctrl+Shift+S Save As, Ctrl+Z Undo, Ctrl+Y Redo, Ctrl+B Bold, Ctrl+I Italic, and Ctrl+F or Ctrl+H Find. In Find, Shift+Enter is Previous and Enter is Next.
A file with raw HTML or footnotes opens read-only. Source and Save / Download keep the original text. File still shows Export Word (.docx)…. Choosing it shows "Download the original Markdown to preserve this document's unsupported content." and does not download a Word file.
Font, size, and theme are written in a comment at the top of the Markdown. YAML front matter is kept.

Quick start

Open /md/.
Click File, then Open files…, and choose a .md, .markdown, .mdown, or .txt file.
Change the text on the page. Home has Bold, Italic, and Find.
Click File, then Save / Download. Your browser downloads a .md file. The file on your computer is not changed.

Privacy

Your files stay on your computer and nothing is uploaded. Documents and the recent list live in this tab's memory. Cookieless page-view analytics go to Cloudflare. That beacon does not include file contents, file names, or anything you type. An image whose address is on another site does not display. This page's security policy blocks that request, so the browser does not fetch it.

Tips

Find will not replace text in a read-only file. Ctrl+F and Ctrl+H both open Find. Find can match case.
In Firefox, the Open folder… dialog says Upload. Nothing is uploaded. The files stay on your computer.
Linked Docs says "Link preview limited to 500 entries and 5 levels" when it stops early. Missing files are shown in red.
If the document has unsaved edits, opening another file asks you to discard them. Undo starts over in the new file.
Save / Download cannot tell whether you saved the download or cancelled it.
A heading link such as notes.md#section opens the file and does not scroll to that heading.
Ctrl+N may be taken by the browser, so New may not run.
If you open File while Outline is still scrolling, the menu closes. Wait until the page stops, then open File again.
Reload clears this tab. Download before you leave.
